Ciudad Vieja literally means “old town”. This is the original Montevideo and is centered around the deep water port, and the now “mercado del puerto”.
Mercado del puerto (port market) has now been transformed into a series of restaurants instead of shops all of which it would seem are parilla style (barbeque style) restaurants serving up 101 cuts of meat.
Ciudud vieja is also where the cruise ships doc and gets alot of tourist traffic. Lately, the government has developed a peatonal or pedestrian walkway by shutting down one of the streets. Street vendors and restaurants and bars line the walkway and a lot of younger people and developers have moved into the neighborhood in a revitalization attempt and a move toward gentrification.
There are still a number of old buildings with busted out windows and some buildings completely bombed out by all appearances as well. In spite of this, the grandeur of the architecture and the central location, as well as beautiful parks and public buildings, continue to attract the more speculative real estate refurbishment and revitalization.
