In Uruguay a "house" usually refers to a free-standing building, but it could
also be used to refer to pretty much any shelter, building, structure or
dwelling that has been adapted to or converted into a habitat for human beings. 
In
Uruguay real estate that includes traditional houses, beach shacks, summer cottages, cabins,
mansions in Maldonado and the Prado neighborhood of Montevideo, and formerly
commercial buildings and spaces converted into homes in Centro.

newer Uruguay houses are usually constructed of cinder-block due to the
relatively high cost of building timber and the absence of earthquakes. 
Older houses run the gamut of architectural styles, from large brick houses,
grand Tudor homes, Mediterranean-style houses, and even neo classical & baroque
to summer houses with thatched roofs outside of the city neighborhoods.

Some of the more modern houses in the resort areas have also experimented
from ultra-chic steel and glass to earthen houses simple sod construction.
